Bloggy Housekeeping

This great photo can be found here.

Just a quick note on some general blog housekeeping. I'm not very happy with the look of my sidebar, so in the next few days you may find that the blogroll is missing from it. I am currently writing a post with all of the blogs from the blogroll, plus a few new ones, that will be linked to a shorter something in the sidebar.

I'd also like to add header tabs that would link to Home, the Blogroll, About Me, and I'm not sure what else. But first I have to write all of the articles, and the Blogroll is the only one that I've started on. Of course, I could find a prettier way to do this in the sidebar, which would negate the need to add tabs.

So my questions for my much more experienced bloggy friends are

1) What aesthetic changes have you made to your blogs that you are happiest with?
2) Are there good references for totally html illiterate bloggers like me to help me through all of this?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Now back to the blogroll!

Your blog looks wonderful! One change that made me really happy on my blog was switching to a 'newspaper' layout... so you can see the most recent posts from multiple different categories on the homepage. That isn't for everyone, but it works well for me.
I also like having 'pages' at the top, and that frees up my sidebar for things like tags and subscribe links.
I use wordpress (so I'm not sure how blogger really works), but there are lots of templates available... and I got my look without too much html-ing.
Hope that helps!

Hi Erin,

Your blog is so very unique and I always enjoy reading it. I feel it flows nicely and is bright and "alive."

I like your blog the way it is, but understand the need for change we all have from time to time. I mess with mine, add stuff, then take it out every once in awhile. I keep coming back to keeping my blog format as simple as possible so the sides and other decorations don't detract from the images and content of the current posts.

Although I don't have much to offer you for change, I would like to hire the lady in your image who is cleaning what looks like my dining room ceiling.

A while back I changed my layout from the two column to a three column. I found a tutorial that was pretty easy to follow. It took a bit of tweaking...but eventually it was fine. http://www.bloggerbuster.com/2007/07/create-three-column-blogger-template.html

I have been considering adding tabs to the top, too..is there a tutorial for that somewhere?

I can't wait to see your blog all fresh! Even though it still is adorable.

My happiest recent change: I just recently added 'pages' to my blog. In blogger, go to the "pages" tab, which you will find next to the "edit posts" tab and it will let you add up to 10 pages. I have the links to my pages under my header. I now have a 'home' page, a 'beautiful crochet' page, a 'yummy recipes' page and a 'all about Kathy' page. It has neatened my side bar up a lot!

i love how we all like to clean up our blogs and make changes....like rearranging the furniture in our houses...

i get distracted so very easily...part of my adult a.d.d so for me, i just have to keep things simple and uncluttered and uncolored.....

sometimes blogs will have colors that literally give me a headache and i can't read them....or music that scares me...

so my only suggestion ever to anyone, is to only do to your blog what soothes you when you are on someone elses blog....

i hope that helps....

I'm not a blogger blogger, but here are a couple tutorials that I've run across:

http://shabbyblogsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/tutorials - for adding buttons, etc.

I just ran across this today (when hunting some wordpress stuff) & it seems like it would be pretty good:

I'm going to check out the new tabs thingy on blogger-- might be nice to get some stuff off my sidebar... on the other hand, I wonder if it will ever be seen once it's off the front page? Hm... I just updated mine with a new template that's fun & makes me happy. I do not do any html at all.

Good luck with the changes... I wish I had advice for you, but I don't really know much yet, SOOOO - maybe you can pass your advice on to me.

when it comes to making adjustments on my blog, i always give myself permission to change my mind. sometimes i over-think things, so instead of committing to anything, i'll give it a try for a few days and see how i feel then. does that make any sense? my syntax feels off tonight :)

good luck!
